SAN ANTONIO – Editor’s note: Signs at the protest and language in the stream may be inappropriate for some viewers.
A protest against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportations took place in downtown San Antonio on Sunday.
The event, called “No To Mass Deportations - ICE Out Of San Antonio,” began at 11 a.m. on Sunday at San Antonio City Hall, 100 Military Plaza.
For more than a week, ICE officers have been detaining immigrants after they leave their scheduled court hearings, including a mother and child immediately after an immigration hearing.
ICE agents in San Antonio also recently detained construction workers on a university campus.
“I honestly thought nobody was going to show up because nobody ever shows up for my people, but once I saw the people walking up here and as I got closer, I got emotional, tears started running down my face,” said Kelsey, a mother and protestor.
Protestor Kat Yuracka said ICE agents wouldn’t be wearing masks during arrests if they weren’t “doing wrong.”
“You would not have taken off your name, you’d be proud of the work you were doing,” Yuracka said.
Protestors also reacted to news of an order from President Donald Trump to deploy the National Guard in Los Angeles for ICE protests.
“It’s an abomination,” said Henry Rodriguez, executive director for the League of United Latin American Citizens San Antonio. “Those people that just got elected to the city council, our new mayor Gina Ortiz Jones, they have as much responsibility to be here with us.”
