New construction underway on North St. Mary Street’s sidewalks

The District 1 pedestrian mobility project aims to enhance accessibility

SAN ANTONIO – Drivers and pedestrians on North St. Mary’s Street will notice sidewalk construction that started on Monday.

The City of San Antonio’s Public Works Department said crews will be working on sidewalk improvements on North St. Mary’s Street from Mistletoe Avenue to Stadium Drive. The estimated completion date is Oct. 13.

“Yeah, the sidewalks along there are kinda crappy, pretty inconsistent,” said nearby neighbor Mitch Hill.

Hill has lived near North St. Mary’s Street for the last nine years and said he takes walks along the street nearly every day. He’s happy with the updates coming to his usual route and thinks it could fare better for the area than previous construction problems.

“Oh, that was a mess,” Hill said. “We wouldn’t even go down the road for a couple of years.”

While attempting to get a street-level view of the construction, a KSAT phone camera mounted on a scooter fell and was subsequently crushed by a VIA bus.

Another neighbor, David Hinojosa, has lived in the area for 10 years and said he’s thrilled with the updated sidewalks coming his way.

“Especially down in there, if there is a sidewalk, it’s mostly broken,” Hinojosa said. “There’s a lot of glass. It’s kind of dirty. So, I think it’ll be so much better.”

The work is part of the District 1 Pedestrian Mobility & Streets Project, a component of the 2017 bond program.

The goal is to enhance mobility for pedestrians and implement street improvements throughout the district, as stated on the city’s website.

Two-way traffic will be maintained. All businesses and residences will remain accessible.

KSAT reported at the beginning of the year that while construction had finally wrapped up on the St. Mary’s Strip, businesses had seen a large decrease in customers.

“Why would they want to come down here and mess with those detours again?” asked Malcolm Hartman, co-owner of Tycoon Flats.

Construction in the area began in March 2021 and ended in September 2024. It included a variety of improvements, such as pedestrian lighting, wider sidewalks, improved drainage and new traffic signals.

With construction set to begin again, it is unclear at this time what this could mean for nearby businesses.
